So, what can vehicle owners expect if they decide to hop into a Chevy Equinox? We’ve answered the top questions that prospective Chevrolet Equinox owners may have.
The answer to this question is, “No, but the option is available.” An all-wheel drive is a drive option, but it does not come standard with every model of the 2019 Chevy Equinox. For people who want All-Wheel Drive (AWD), models 2LT, Premier, Premier 2.0L, and Premier Diesel do carry switchable All-Wheel Drive as standard.
For people who don’t want or need this drive mode, conventional Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) is available in models like the LS, LT, and LT Diesel. However, AWD is available as an upgradeable option, though it will increase the price.
The Chevrolet Equinox uses a “part-time” All-Wheel Drive system so that drivers can switch between traditional FWD and AWD, as and when needed. FWD is the way most cars work, with only the front wheels moving under motor power. That mode is more fuel efficient, and for normal city driving, it functions adequately. However, if you need extra traction, AWD is when all four wheels are powered, for greater grip and mobility in rough terrain like icy conditions or when doing a little bit of off-road driving.
The 2019 Chevy Equinox receives components from different parts of the world, including one plant in China and two plants in Mexico. However, the final assembly of this year’s Chevrolet Equinox model occurs right here in Canada. The GM CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario has been in operation since 1986 and currently serves both Canada and the USA for the latest generation of Chevy Equinox vehicles.
The different models of the 2019 Chevy Equinox have different engines available, but not every model has the option to switch to a different-sized engine. The three available engine sizes are:
• 1.5L Turbo 4-Cylinder Engine
• 2.0L Turbo 4-Cylinder Engine
• 1.6L Turbo-Diesel 4-Cylinder Engine
The 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder engine is the most standard configuration. Of course, choosing diesel vehicles means getting a diesel engine instead, while only the Premier 2.0L has a larger engine.
The curb weight, which is the weight of the car with fuel but unoccupied, varies depending on the model and the engine you choose. For example, the Premier with a 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder engine and AWD weighs about 1,593 kg.
However, if you choose the LS with FWD only and the same engine, the weight is 1,485 kg. So, there’s going to be some variation based on your engine and drive selection.
The Chevy Equinox can comfortably seat a total of five passengers, with one driver and passenger up front, and seating for three persons in the rear passenger cabin.
Under normal driving conditions, you probably won’t need to worry about either of these two configurations, but there are occasions when both can come in very handy. L4 and L2 mean “Low Speed” 4-wheel drive and “Low Speed” 2-wheel drive.
This is a very specific mode of driving where the engines and gears shift to emphasize a lower speed, but with more power turning the wheels. When you encounter situations where traction is more important than speed, that is when the L4 and L2 functions on a Chevy Equinox would come in handy.
The two most common situations where L4 and L2 functions would help are in off-road conditions, especially with a poor road surface, such as wet or muddy ground. The other situation is when you are towing something.
The towing capacity of the Chevrolet Equinox depends on the engine you choose for your vehicle. There are two different towing capacities:
• 680 kg
• 1600 kg
Most Equinox models will only tow 680 kg, with the Premier 2.0L having a higher towing capacity.
